Matt’s Total Team Goals Best Bets Sat 29th August

It’s Saturday again and with a Bank Holiday to look forward to on Monday it’s time to settle down into a feast of football. I’ve been on the hunt for those teams who can punish their opponents with a few goals this weekend in my team goals treble. Hopefully it sees us earn some pennies for the long weekend.

AFC Wimbledon vs Exeter

Following their midweek trip to Sunderland in the Capital One Cup, a game in which they lost 6-3, Exeter return to league action and I simply have to back them to concede a couple of goals away at AFC Wimbledon this weekend.
The hosts have hardly been lighting fires on the goals front this season, but they have scored in 3 of their 4 league games this term and got an encouraging 1-1 draw away at Carlisle last weekend. With 7 days rest under their belts, they host an Exeter side who they have scored 2 goals against each time they have visited.

Exeter played on Tuesday night and despite a slightly embarrassing scoreline, their performance didn’t justify conceding 6 goals to be honest. But their defence away from home has been an on-going problem, keeping just 2 clean sheets in the last 12 months on their travels and given that they are yet to keep a clean sheet this season, going up against fresher legs and against a side who have a very decent record against them, I think Exeter will struggle to shut down a Wimbledon attack which includes the likes of Akinfenwa and Barcham.

Lincoln vs Grimsby

I’ve decided to go with a pretty safe option here in the Conference but it makes a great addition to a treble. That being said, I’d be happy to take Lincoln to score 2 goals here at 21/10 if you want a big price, but the fact that you can get near on 50% return on your money for Grimsby to concede is pretty incredible and I’ll explain why.

Both sides have played 5 games this season and both have scored and conceded in all 5 games. Here at Sincil Bank, Lincoln started their home campaign with an impressive 1-1 draw against newly relegated Cheltenham before putting 5 goals past Macclesfield in their last game here. They’ve now scored 11 goals in 5 league games, not a bad return at all. Today they host a Grimsby side who are undoubtedly stronger on paper and can score goals for fun on their day, but defensively this season they have been weak to say the least.

Grimsby may have the best attack in the league so far this season with 13 goals, but they also have the joint 7th worst defence, conceding 8 goals in their 5 games and conceding an average of 2 goals per game away from home. So with Lincoln scoring an average of over 2 per game at home and Grimsby conceding an average of 2 goals per game away, the 21/10 for Lincoln to score 2 or more doesn’t half look tempting in my eyes.

And that theory is compounded even more when you consider that Lincoln not only scored 3 goals against Grimsby when they last hosted them here, but they put 3 past them on their own patch as well last season doing the double over a promotion chasing outfit with 3-2 and 1-3 victories.

If you fancy a risk then add the 2+ goals, but I’m taking a simple bet of Lincoln to score at what is frankly an incredible price given the stats.

Plymouth vs Newport County

The last two meetings between these two sides here at Home Park have both ended goalless, but I’m banking on lightning not striking 3 times here as these two sides seem poles apart since the last time they met.

Plymouth are flying high in League Two this year, sitting 3rd in the league with 3 wins from their 4 games and finding the net in every game they’ve played this season.

Their last game here at home resulted in a 4-1 thrashing of Carlisle, a side who sit just above Newport in the league at the moment. The visitors fortunes have been completely different, picking up just 1 point from their 4 games and boasting the unwanted record of the 2nd worst defence in League Two, conceding in every game this season and conceding 2 or more in 4 of their 5 games in all competitions.

With Jake Jervis and Reuben Reid, the alliterated duo up to for Plymouth in fine form, I can see Plymouth scoring at least 2 goals here in front of their own fans against a Newport side who just cannot defend it seems.
