Altrincham vs Grimsby

We start in the Conference where a struggling Altrincham side host a Grimsby side who will be looking to secure promotion this year after narrowly missing out in a playoff final penalty shootout last season.

The Mariners couldn’t get much closer than they did last year without securing a spot in the football league and manager Paul Hurst will be hopeful of taking it 1 step further this season.

Given how they have started their 2015-16 campaign, Hurst and Grimsby fans are within their rights to be confident and when you combine their undefeated start this year with their pre-season form, Grimsby should definitely be in with a shot.

Not only have Hurst’s men started their league campaign with 2 wins and a draw, scoring 8 goals in the process, they also picked up wins against the likes of Peterborough, Huddersfield, Notts County and Derby over the summer, scoring 2 or more goals in all of those games. In fact, Grimsby have scored 2 or more goals in every game they have played since that loss on penalties to Bristol Rovers at Wembley back in May.

As for Altrincham, well they had a respectable season last year considering it was their first foray at this level, finishing a creditable 17th, 17 points above relegation.

Manager Lee Sinnott has been with the club for a few years now guiding them to promotion from the Conference North but he would have been hoping for a much better start to the season than his side have produced. 3 losses on the bounce without scoring a single goal means Alty are rooted to the foot of the conference and having already lost here at The J Davidson Stadium to league leaders Forest Green, Sinnott will not be welcoming the visit of high flying Grimsby.

Given the scoring power of the visitors so far this year I see Grimsby having no issues finding the net a couple of times!

AFC Wimbledon vs Cambridge

With 7 goals in their 2 league games so far including a stunning 4-4 draw with Carlisle at the weekend, Cambridge seem a decent side to back for goals this season. The man to thank for most of those goals is Irish striker Barry Corr who joined The U’s over the summer from Southend and seems to be relishing the opportunity here at a lower level.

Corr has scored 4 of Cambridge’s 7 goals this season and currently leads the way for League Two’s top scorer. Today Cambridge travel to AFC Wimbledon who have had an indifferent start to the season, losing 0-2 in their first home game here against Plymouth before picking up a win away at Crawley at the weekend. They’re yet to keep a clean sheet in any competition so far this year and also failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their pre-season friendlies.

When the two last met here the visitors managed to secure a 1-2 win and with Corr in such great goalscoring form against an unreliable Wimbledon defence, I’m backing Cambridge to bag a couple of goals at a very decent price.

Coventry vs Crewe

Crewe started their campaign with a 0-0 draw against Port Vale but were lucky to get away from that game with a point. At the weekend they suffered a 2-0 loss at the hands of a Scunthorpe side who were far from impressive and sandwiched in between they exited the Capital One Cup at the hands of Preston, losing 1-3 at home.

I really don’t see Crewe having a great season this year and after they narrowly escaped relegation last season I can see nothing more than Steve Davis’s men scrapping it out at the bottom of the league come May.

Their pre-season looks very flattering with 6 wins from 7 games, but they didn’t play a single team who you could consider being a challenge, in fact the closest they came to a challenge was against Conference side Chester, and that was the one game they lost. When you consider that Crewe only kept 2 clean sheets over the summer friendlies and that most of those games were against pub teams, I really don’t see how this defence will cope this year.

Today they visit a Coventry side who are looking for some stability this season after years of turmoil and currently sitting top of the league having opened their campaign against 2 former Championship sides who they have seen off 2-0 and 0-4, confidence in the Sky Blues’ camp seems to be high.

Adam Armstrong has scored 4 of those 6 goals and with James Maddison providing the assists, this side looks full of goals. I’ve got absolutely no choice but to include Coventry in this treble.
