Cardiff City V Bournemouth

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have lost his job in the Welsh capital but not much changed this weekend as the Bluebirds scored twice against high-flying Derby only to be let down by their inadequate defence. That should be a continuing theme for this Capital One Cup clash against fellow Championship side Bournemouth.

The Cherries have experienced a fairly similar start to the season as Cardiff and both teams have nine points from the opening eight league matches. Likewise, each club has seen plenty of goals at either end with Cardiff scoring 10 in comparison to Bournemouth’s 12 – both have conceded 11.

Bournemouth are suffering some really poor form right now and have failed to win any of their past five Championship outings. However, they have found the target in all of them. Meanwhile, three of Cardiff’s last five league matches also ended in BTTS winners.

The sides haven’t met competitively since 2008 but there is definitely a trend of goals when they do meet with all five 21st century contests, as well as two more recent pre-season matches, bringing goals at each end.

Each club will fancy its chances of progression and attack is the best form of defence for both. Expect plenty of action at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Fulham V Doncaster Rovers

Caretaker boss Kit Symons couldn’t spark a result from Fulham at the weekend but his second audition for the permanent vacancy could go much smoother against League One Doncaster.

Fulham were actually doing OK before being reduced to 10 men on Saturday and this break from Championship football may offer them the rest-bite needed to start a mini revival. The visitors have shipped 11 goals in League One already and so the Cottagers will be fancied to flex their muscles here, particularly on home soil.

An extended cup run isn’t important for Fulham but a return to winning way is and this should spur them on against Rovers. However, their diabolical defence looks bereft of confidence following 18 months of conceding goals galore and we’re therefore backing the visitors to at least find the net.

Paul Dickov’s men were involved in a dramatic 3-2 win over Chesterfield at the weekend and also claimed a 2-1 win over Watford in the previous round of this competition. Hopefully the goals will continue to rain as they head to Craven Cottage.

MK Dons V Bradford City

The undisputed heroes of round 2 were MK Dons and Karl Robinson’s side will be hoping for another triumph as they take on fellow League One side Bradford City.

Both the Dons and Bantams are in good form heading into this one and each are looking for promotion to the Championship in 2014/15. However, this break from league matters offers a great opportunity for further success and we’d expect it to be a clash packed with goals as they bid a fourth round spot.

Bradford know all about success in this competition after reaching the final two years ago but could be in for a difficult one at the Stadium:MK as the home side are in fine scoring form. Six goals at the weekend took the Dons’ tally to 28 games from 10 competitive matches this season and the likes of Benik Afobe and Deli Alli will be eager to continue their scoring exploits here.

However, the Bantams do boast 12 league goals in nine matches, in spite of a 0-0 stalemate at Colchester last Saturday. With the Dons conceding 11 in eight league matches, Bradford can be equally optimistic of finding the target at some stage.
