Well, the Merseyside derby produced a 0-0 when most punters fancied a BTTS Yes last weekend, while Blackburn couldn’t do their part and score for the Championship pick. All in all, it illustrates that stats can be useful, but also useless.
As such, I’ll have one more try at using the best statistical pick in each of England’s top 3 divisions and putting them into a treble, but if it fails, well, I’ll just pick whatever I think is best from next week onwards. As for this week, find the stat picks below:
Norwich v Wolves
Canaries’ home games have pretty kind to this column with regards to both teams scoring and we’ll give them a shot once more, this time against a Wolves side that has been consistently scoring in their away games.
Stats wise, both teams have scored in 11 of Norwich’s 15 home games in 2014/15, making up a 73.3% strike rate. The Canaries themselves have scored in 14/15. Wolves, on the other hand, have seen both teams score in 7 of their 15 away games for a low 46.7% BTTS Yes strike rate.
However, both teams have scored in each of Wolves’ last 2 away games, so we’re good to go on current form, and the Midlands club have scored in 5 straight away matches. So, all in all, if we deduce that Norwich are highly likely to score on home soil, 46.7% isn’t so much of a worry.

Charlton v Brentford
Charlton have a 66.7% BTTS Yes strike rate from their home games in 2014/15, with 10/15 seeing both teams score, including 4 of their last 5. Brentford, meanwhile, have a lesser but still strong BTTS Yes record in their away games, with 9 of their 15 road contests seeing both teams score, including 3 of their last 5.
In truth, Norwich v Wolves was what I fancied as the Championship BTTS pick this week, but then this column is all about the strongest combined statistical offering in each of England’s top 3 divisions, and that’s Charlton v Brentford.

Oldham v Colchester
Both teams have scored in 10 out of Oldham’s 14 home games in 2014/15, including in 3 of their last 4, making up an impressive 71.4% strike rate. Colchester, meanwhile, have seen both teams score in 8 of their 15 road games, making up a 53.3% strike rate.
Just like the Championship pick, though, my preference was Walsall v Port Vale, but it wasn’t as strong a bet statistically. Fingers crossed.
