Luton Town V Swindon Town

BTTS is 4/5 at BetVictor

Our first selection comes from Kenilworth Road as newly promoted League Two side Luton Town hosts League One’s Swindon in one of the most hotly anticipated clashes of the round.

The Hatters finally secured their return to the Football League last season and started their campaign with an impressive 1-0 away win at the recently relegated Carlisle United. Having beaten the Cumbrians away, they’ll be hopeful of extending their perfect start by winning this opening home match of the season.

Swindon will pose a much stronger threat, though, especially as they enter this cup match on the back of a 3-1 opening day victory over Scunthorpe. The Robins should be amongst the teams fighting for a top six finish in League One and Mark Cooper’s men will be confident of a positive result against Luton.

If Cooper opts for his best XI then the visitors will almost certainly score, particularly if star striker Michael Smith starts. The January signing was superb during his first six months at the County Ground and started his first full term with the Robins by netting twice at the weekend – he could be all the difference to Swindon’s success at Kenilworth Road.

The visitors must be wary of Luton, though, and the hosts will be determined to celebrate in style in front of their home support. The likes of Paul Benson are certainly capable of finding the target and should pose a constant threat to the Swindon defence.

This one really could go either way; we’re backing both teams to score.

Rochdale V Preston North End

BTTS is 13/20 at BetVictor

League One newcomers Rochdale came back crashing down to earth in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Peterborough United but could be in for a more positive night in their cup clash against Preston North End.

Dale hit 69 league goals in 2013/14 as they raced to promotion from League Two and one blank will not deter Keith Hill’s men at Spotland. Meanwhile, fellow League One side Preston will be equally confident of finding the net in this Capital One Cup clash.

The Lilywhites opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Notts County thanks to a late Joe Garner leveller and the 26-year-old striker will be looking to bag plenty more goals in the coming months. He could potentially be one of the division’s highest scorers and may be the key to helping last year’s play-off finalists go one better in 2014/15.

Pre-season fixtures may not count for a lot but, combined with Saturday’s league opener, Preston’s last five matches have all ended in BTTS winners. Hopefully that trend will continue here.

York City V Doncaster Rovers

BTTS is 8/11 at BetVictor

Paul Dickov’s Donny Rovers began life in League One with a confident win against fellow new-boys Yeovil and will be hoping to make it two away wins on the spin with a cup victory against LeagueTwo side York City.

Doncaster may be a division above Tuesday’s opponents but that doesn’t mean their trip to Bootham Crescent will be easy. Nigel Worthington’s men were desperately unlucky to miss out on promotion last term and will be hoping for better luck in 2014/15.

They began the new season with a 1-1 draw at Tranmere Rovers and will be confident about their home scoring account up and running at the first opportunity.

York enjoyed an incredible defensive run towards the end of last season but will have to be at their very best to keep a clean sheet against their cup opponents. This has the potential to be one of the most entertaining match-ups of the round and we’re predicting goals at either end.
